Today electrical power transmission systems typically use poly-phase alternating current (AC), when submarine cables are used as the transmission line the distance of power transmission becomes a significant constraint. Connection from offshore to onshore is by a long high voltage (HV) submarine cable, as offshore wind farms are located further from the shore, connection using AX becomes non-viable and the use of HVDC is required. HVDC us a mature and well understood technology, however development opportunities exist where the efficiency and capacity of existing technology can be improved.
